30,000 words a day keep children mentally healthy, says study

By Brant McLaughlin

August 14, 2007 - Infoture, Inc, said on Tuesday that "Power of Talk" studies reveal children aged three and under need approximately 30,000 words spoken to them per day by their parents and other caregivers in order to ensure their optimal linguistic and intellectual success. This word number threshold cuts across all gender, ethnic, racial, and economic lines, claim the studies.

Power of Talk research is becoming internationally renowned and is based on research findings by Dr. Todd Risley, Ph.D.

"When parents share their children's output of words with me, I remind them that it's actually the input that matters. The parents' and caregivers' words are what really count. It's not educational toys, TV, or videos that make your child smart and well-adjusted; it's talk. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children two years and under not watch any TV or videos, but spend quality time with caregivers instead," said Steven Perry, M.D., pediatrician with Cherry Creek Pediatrics in Denver.
