Family field trips - make learning on the go fun!
"Tell me and I will forget... show me and I may remember... involve me and I will understand." - Ancient Chinese proverb
Imagine trying to teach a child the difference between a fish and a bird when the child has never had any experiences with fish, or birds for that matter. A skill that must be taught and mastered in kindergarten is for the student to be able to distinguish between different characteristics of animals, their life cycles and the habitats for which they live. In this case, to understand that birds have feathers, beaks and can fly - while fish have gills, fins and can swim. They would study the behaviors of these animals and determine what they eat, how they are born and in what habitats they reside.
With all of this said, why are field trips important? They are important to offer background knowledge and active learning experiences for textbook learning in school. If you have had no experience with molecular biology, how long would it take you to "get it?" There are only 180 days in a school year and science accounts for only 10 to 15 percent of the school day in most schools.

"Wiggle Giggle Learn's field trips gave me so many more ideas of how I could build my child's knowledge about people and places in our world. It is amazing how easy it is to "teach" while simply running an errand - I love it!" - Allison S. (Oklahoma)
